Homily for Body and Blood of Christ Sunday

Homilies are now available to download and listen to!

As part of our answering the challenge of the Holy Father to go out and evangelize utilizing new technologies, we're now offering the homily each week for download. Clicking the link to the homily should download it and automatically start it playing in whatever music player your computer is set up with.

On the technical side, the file sizes are about 5 megs which means it may a minute or two to download on slower Internet connections. It is also an MP3 formatted file which means that these are essentially podcasts. Don't worry if all the technical words don't mean much to you. It means we're using the latest in technology in order to make sure our church parish can reach the most people.

The current week's homily is available on a link on the front page of the website next to the link for the current week's bulletin. On the page with the prior bulletins, the corresponding homily will be sitting side by side with its bulletin. We started on the anniversary of the start of the Catholic Church, Pentecost Sunday --- two years ago. This week, Body and Blood of Christ Sunday, is our one hundredth and thirty fourth! podcast to be posted. The homily is given by Father James Brady.

So, take a listen and let us know what you think. Click here to download the Body and Blood of Christ Sunday homily from St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, Louisiana.

Saturday at the New Life Center

I dropped by the New Life Center in Opelousas, Louisiana on Saturday June 25, 2011. Below are photos of the new sign on Landry Street as well as the front of the building.

Above photo - Dwayne Joubert and Scott Peyton were there painting the laundry room area of the facility. They both are studying to become deacons for the Diocese of Lafayette and are on schedule to be ordained in 2012.

The website for the New Life Center, part of Lafayette Catholic Service Centers, is found here:
http://www.catholicservice.org/PageDisplay.asp?p1=2951

New Life Center, located in Opelousas, provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and supportive services for up to 51 homeless women and 58 children per night.  Residents are provided with shelter and services for up to two years while working towards self-sufficiency. All residents participate in case management where they are assisted with applying for mainstream benefits, entering school, obtaining employment and permanent housing.

Residents also participate in life skills sessions, job counseling and are referred to outside agencies for additional counseling. The residents have access to case management services for an additional six months after they leave the center. A chemical dependency program is also available for those women recovering from alcohol and/or drug addictions. This program provides addiction education support groups and case management.

Do Re Mi

Today is the day we sing Ut Queant Laxis ...

Ut queant laxis
resonare fibris
Mira gestorum
famuli tuorum,
Solve polluti
labi reatum,
Sancte Iohannes

The translation would be ...

So that your servants may, with loosened voices, resound the wonders of your deeds, clean the guilt from our stained lips, O Saint John.

It's the Feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist today ... 6 months until the Birth of Jesus at Christmas.

Here is that same hymn with inflections highlighted ...

_Ut_ queant laxis
_re_sonare fibris
_Mi_ra gestorum
_fa_muli tuorum,
_Sol_ve polluti
_la_bi reatum,
_S_ancte _I_ohannes

The solfege ... what we know as Do Re Mi Fa ... has it's origins in this ancient hymn .... the inflections used to sing it. Over centuries, due to pronunciation changes, Ut became Do to illustrate that particular sound better.
