Homily for the Baptism of the Lord

Homilies are now available to download and listen to!

As part of our answering the challenge of the Holy Father to go out and evangelize utilizing new technologies, we're now offering the homily each week for download. Clicking the link to the homily should download it and automatically start it playing in whatever music player your computer is set up with.

On the technical side, the file sizes are about 5 megs which means it may a minute or two to download on slower Internet connections. It is also an MP3 formatted file which means that these are essentially podcasts. Don't worry if all the technical words don't mean much to you. It means we're using the latest in technology in order to make sure our church parish can reach the most people.

The current week's homily is available on a link on the front page of the website next to the link for the current week's bulletin. On the page with the prior bulletins, the corresponding homily will be sitting side by side with its bulletin. We started on the anniversary of the start of the Catholic Church, Pentecost Sunday --- over a year and a half ago. This week, Baptism of the Lord, is our one hundredth and fourth! podcast to be posted. The homily is given by our pastor Father James Brady.

So, take a listen and let us know what you think. Click here to download the Baptism of the Lord homily from St. Landry Catholic Church, Opelousas, Louisiana.

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

This Sunday is the 3rd Sunday of Advent and has been known historically as Gaudete Sunday. This name comes from the introit of the old mass ...

Latin:

Gaudéte in Dómino semper: íterum dico, gaudéte.
Translated:

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice.
As something a little different, I've included a video of a medieval song called Gaudete. Enjoy.

Latin lyrics first, followed by English:

Latin:

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

Tempus adest gratiæ
Hoc quod optabamus,
Carmina lætitiæ
Devote reddamus.

Deus homo factus est
Natura mirante,
Mundus renovatus est
A Christo regnante.

Ezechielis porta
Clausa pertransitur,
Unde lux est orta
Salus invenitur.

Ergo nostra contio
Psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus Regi nostro.
And English:

Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born
Of the Virgin Mary — rejoice!

The time of grace has come—
This that we have desired,
Verses of joy
Let us devoutly return.

God has become man,
Nature marveling,
The world has been renewed
By the reigning Christ.

The closed gate of Ezechiel
Is passed through,
Whence the light is born,
Salvation is found.

Therefore let our gathering
Now sing in brightness
Let it give praise to the Lord:
Greeting to our King.

The Doll and Toy Fund

The annual Doll and Toy Fund, sponsored by the Catholic Daughters, is now underway.

Monetary donations may be mailed to Janis Courvelle, 1826 Edwards St, Opelousas, La. 70570.

Make checks or money orders payable to DOLL AND TOY FUND.

We welcome NEW toys, which may be brought to Valentin Hall during office hours. Mon.-Thurs. 8:30am until 11:45 and again from 1:00pm until 4:00pm. On Fridays, no later than 11:45am.

For more information, call 789-0971.

But some history ...

The Doll and Toy Fund dates back to the 1920's. Men who came home after serving in World War I were having problems making ends meet. The Catholic Daughters mended clothing and cleaned up toys to be given out to help these families.

Currently, the Fund helps more than 2,000 children per year. 7 local schools in Opelousas submit lists of needy children looking for a bright spot in the holiday season. Children who receive treatment at the Opelousas Area Cerebral Palsy Clinic also receive toys.
