Parish Lenten Mission - March 14 through March 16, 2011

Our Lenten Parish Mission will take place March 14, 15, and 16, 2011. The theme of the mission is “The Mystery of Suffering: Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?”

The mission will be presented by Fr. Brady and will be introduced at the Sunday Masses on March 12 and 13, 2011. The mission will begin each night at 6:30 pm with Mass and the mission talk will take place after Mass beginning at about 7 pm. Each talk will last 45 minutes to an hour, so the mission should be concluded by 8 pm each evening.

The mission will address issues related to the mystery of suffering, beginning with how God created the world “good”, the fall of mankind, suffering in the Old Testament, and how Jesus redeemed suffering in his life, death, and resurrection. Some of the topics addressed will be:

  • The fallacy of the gospel of prosperity
  • What does it mean when we say suffering is “redeemed”?
  • What does it mean when we “offer up” our sufferings?
  • What is the meaning of “sacrifice” in our lives?
Suffering is something we don’t talk about enough, and at times may not be prepared to endure. The mission will try to help us penetrate the mystery of suffering and help us to be more cognizant of God’s Love for us and each other in our suffering.

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us!

New book - Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist by Brant Pitre

“Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist: Unlocking the Secrets of the Last Supper” by Brant Pitre

The book is available on Amazon by clicking here.

In this new book, Dr. Brant Pitre does an excellent job illuminating the parallels as well as the differences from Jewish worship at the time of Christ to the actions of Christ and the beginnings of Christianity.

Dr. Pitre puts worship and the hopes of a coming Messiah in the perspective of a Jewish person living at the time of Christ. He describes the worship at the first Passover, the rituals of worship during the Exodus, and goes on to the Passover rituals followed at the time of Christ. The details here are not the type of things the typical Catholic would know about Jewish worship and tradition. Even more intriguing was the anticipation by Jews of a "new Exodus" in relation to the coming of the Messiah. Dr. Pitre's easy to read, straight forward style helps tie these details together to the "new Passover" worship found in Christianity.

Some of the connections between the Passover rituals to the Catholic mass have been touched on in other books. But this book does a tremendous job of bringing all of the related items together in one, well organized place. In Dr. Pitre's closing discussion, he details just where you can find references to the Passover in other texts including the writings of the Early Father's of the Church, the Catechism of the Catholic Church, as well as writers in Jewish and Protestant faiths. Detailed notes for further reading follow in the back of the book with references to Pope Benedict XVI, Thomas Aquinas, and Justin Martyr as well as a veritable "Who's Who" of scripture scholars.

The book has an introduction by well known Catholic writer Scott Hahn as well as a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur. Dr. Pitre has degrees from the Notre Dame University in Indiana and is currently a professor of sacred scripture at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the Jewish roots of Catholic worship as well as anyone wanting to have a better appreciation of the Real Presence within the Eucharist. I believe it will also aid many in a better understanding of the celebration of the Catholic mass.

New look website for the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana

It looks like the web developers at the Diocese of Lafayette, Louisiana have been busy transitioning to a new look website! See the photo down at the bottom of this posting.

There are links to every church parish, each school, and all of the offices at the Diocese. You can read about a "Saint of the Day" or get the readings for today's mass. And the Bishop's monthly column can be found there as well.

The website works on any computer browser and is compatible with your mobile devices ... like your iPhone.

There are a few problems ... like the links to individual parish websites have a few bugs. I've already contacted them about correcting that.

The website can be found at: http://diolaf.org

We want to thank the Bishop and everyone at the Diocese offices for their hard work!

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

This Sunday is the 3rd Sunday of Advent and has been known historically as Gaudete Sunday. This name comes from the introit of the old mass ...

Latin:

Gaudéte in Dómino semper: íterum dico, gaudéte.
Translated:

Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I say, rejoice.
As something a little different, I've included a video of a medieval song called Gaudete. Enjoy.

Latin lyrics first, followed by English:

Latin:

Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
Ex Maria virgine, gaudete!

Tempus adest gratiæ
Hoc quod optabamus,
Carmina lætitiæ
Devote reddamus.

Deus homo factus est
Natura mirante,
Mundus renovatus est
A Christo regnante.

Ezechielis porta
Clausa pertransitur,
Unde lux est orta
Salus invenitur.

Ergo nostra contio
Psallat iam in lustro;
Benedicat Domino:
Salus Regi nostro.
And English:

Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born
Of the Virgin Mary — rejoice!

The time of grace has come—
This that we have desired,
Verses of joy
Let us devoutly return.

God has become man,
Nature marveling,
The world has been renewed
By the reigning Christ.

The closed gate of Ezechiel
Is passed through,
Whence the light is born,
Salvation is found.

Therefore let our gathering
Now sing in brightness
Let it give praise to the Lord:
Greeting to our King.

Holy Father's Prayer Intentions for November 2010

Pope Benedict XVI prays in front of Saint Peter's tomb in the Vatican Grotto at the Vatican November 2, 2010.

Pope Benedict's general prayer intention for November 2010: "That victims of drugs or of other dependence may, thanks to the support of the Christian community, find in the power of our saving God strength for a radical life-change."

The Holy Father's mission intention for November 2010 is "That the Churches of Latin America may move ahead with the continent-wide mission proposed by their bishops, making it part of the universal missionary task of the People of God."
