Father Lafleur's 100th Birthday

Today is Lt. Father Joseph Verbis Lafleur's 100th birthday! A group of Opelousas Catholic students, parents, and teachers are all in Washington, D.C. for the Walk for Life and visited the memorial to Father Lafleur at Arlington Cemetery. Pictured are Kelly Mire and her daughter, Morgan Dupuis. They are Fr. Lafleur's grand niece and great grand niece, respectively. Also pictured is Father James Brady, our pastor. Eighty-three Catholic military chaplains who gave their lives during World War II, the Korean Conflict and in the Vietnam War are honored on this monument at Arlington National Cemetery. The monument was erected on May 21, 1989, on Chaplains' Hill by the Archdiocese for the Military Services, Silver Spring, Md.

The dedication ceremony, which began with a concelebrated Mass in the Amphitheater of the Cemetery, was presided over by Archbishop Joseph T. Ryan, Archbishop of the Military Archdiocese. Other guests included Brigadier General Patrick H. Brady, chief of public affairs, and the secretary of the Army, who was the speaker for the dedication ceremony. General Brady, a Roman Catholic, earned the Medal of Honor in Vietnam.

Monuments honoring chaplains from all denominations who died in World War I and the Protestant chaplains who died during World War II stand alongside the Catholic Chaplains' monument.

Seventy priests lost their lives in World War II, six in Korea, and seven in Vietnam. Many of their relatives attended the dedication ceremony, along with 83 priests from 43 dioceses and religious orders. Many diocesan bishops and religious superiors also attended the ceremonies.

The idea for this monument originated with Mr. Raymond Costanzo, superintendent of Arlington National Cemetery in 1989. He discussed the idea with Colonel Daniel Donahue, command chaplain for the U.S. Army Military District of Washington. Chaplain Donahue submitted a proposal to the Archdiocese for the Military Services, and the proposal was accepted by the priests' council of the Archdiocese in September 1988. Arlington National Cemetery granted approval in October of that year.

The monument is an unpolished granite stone with a bronze plaque. The stone stands six feet 10 inches tall and is 42 inches wide and 10 inches thick. The plaque is 50 inches by 30 inches. It lists the names of the chaplains alphabetically for World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The cost was approximately $8,000 and was paid for out of the general operating funds of the Archdiocese. The monument was constructed by the Raymond G. Merkle Cemetery Monument Company of Baltimore, Md.

March for Life in Washington D.C. 2012

Father Brady and a group of students, parents, and teachers from Opelousas Catholic are all in Washington D.C. this week to participate in the events surrounding the annual March for Life. It's the 39th anniversary of the court decision that legalized abortion in this country. The March for Life has become the largest and longest-running civil rights movement since the drive for equal rights in the 1960s. Today is a good day to pray a rosary to turn people's hearts toward a greater respect for life ... at all ages.

25th Annual Walk for Life

St. Landry Right to Life will sponsor the 25th Annual Walk for Life on Saturday, January 21 at Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church on South Union Street in Opelousas, beginning at 10 AM The short program will feature Father James Brady, and also the Holy Ghost Children’s Choir. The Walk for Life proceeds to the New Life Center on East Landry Street, ending around noon. The Catholic Daughters will serve refreshments. Catholic Daughters Toy Drive

The annual Doll and Toy Fund drive of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Landry Court No. 119 continues to collect toys for needy children in St. Landry Parish.

The organization is asking for donations of new toys, which will be distributed to children in the seven public elementary schools in the city whose families are in need, as well as to children who receive services from the Opelousas Cerebral Palsy Clinic, one day care center and children living at Faith House, a shelter for battered women and their children.

Drop boxes are at St. Landry Catholic Church, Our Lady Queen of Angels Catholic Church, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Donuts Galore, Guaranty Glass, John Deere Tractor, St. Landry Homestead, Tri-Parish Uniforms, Village Boutique, Courvelle Toyota, St. Landry Bank, Van eaton and romero and LHC Family Fitness.

Outreach Saturday - December 17 2011

To all Missionaries,

Please consider joining us this Saturday, December 17, as we go out into our community to let them know that Father Brady and St. Landry Church care about them and is praying for them.

Outreach actually begins at 10:00 a.m. but there is Mass at 8:00 a.m. and then fellowship immediately following with coffee and donuts. At approximately 9:00 a.m. we begin instruction on Outreach and at 9:30 a.m. we form groups and hand out maps and handouts and then leave Valentin Hall at 10:00 a.m. We return to Valentin Hall at noon for sharing and then dismissal with a prayer.

Great parish Work Day last Saturday - note from Father Brady

Many thanks to all those who came out and helped on the parish workday last weekend. Approximately 25 people attended and helped to clean up and repair our church, rectory and Valentin Hall.

It was not only a day of service to the parish, but also a day of fellowship with other parishioners. We were blessed with beautiful weather, and it seems that not only was much accomplished, but a good time was had by all. Thanks again!!!

Travel backin time to a place where the voices from our past will give you a reflection oftimes gone by. The one hour tour of St.Landry Catholic Church Cemetery gives one a perspective of how our past hasshaped our present and reflects into the future generations of community.

The St. LandryCatholic Church Parish and Opelousas Little Theatre are pleased to bring thisreenactment for your enjoyment of the Civil War time. Tours are $10 per person,will be limited to groups of 15 (walking shoes), conducted hourly, are nothandicapped accessible and young children under 10 years of age not suitable(safety). History of the Catholic Church Part 1 - Thursday Night

STARTING THURSDAY NIGHT, 6 PM!

From Father James Brady:

In October and November, we will begin our adult education with two presentations on the history of our Church, followed next spring by an introduction into Sacred Scripture. The first history presentation, which will be Thursday, October 6 at 6 pm in church, will begin with the founding of our Church and will run through the Great Schism, which occurred around 1000A.D. It will focus on, and hopefully give us an understanding of, what we commonly refer to as the “Eastern Catholic” Churches and the “Eastern Orthodox” Churches. The second presentation will take place Thursday, November 3 and will focus on the Protestant Reformation, which occurred around 1500 A.D. and will focus on the founding of the many Christian churches we commonly see here in the United States, and more particularly our Opelousas community. It is important for us to understand history so we can understand our Church, and also to understand the beliefs of the churches in our community. I hope you mark your calendars for these days and are able to attend.

Father Lafleur Memorial Mass - September 7, 2011

The Father Lafleur Memorial Mass

The Lieutenant Father Joseph Verbis Lafleur Memorial Mass will be at 6:30 PM, September 7, 2011 on the anniversary of Father Lafleur’s death at St. Landry Catholic Church, 1020 North Main Street, Opelousas, Louisiana.

The mass will be celebrated by Abbott Justin Brown, O.S.B., St. Joseph's Seminary, St. Benedict, Louisiana.

For the last several years, St. Landry Catholic Church has hosted this annual Mass in honor of one of its former altar boys; it was, in fact, through the help and guidance of the pastor, Father A. B. Colliard, that a young Lafleur was eventually able to enter the seminary. Today, some of Father Lafleur’s relatives in the Opelousas area are still parishioners of St. Landry Catholic Church. In 2007, a monument in honor of his memory was erected on the church grounds.

After being ordained to the priesthood in 1938, Father Lafleur went on to serve both his church and his country as a military chaplain during World War II. He and more than 600 other prisoners were killed when the Japanese ship transporting them was torpedoed. Although Father Lafleur’s body was never recovered, survivors later recalled that he was last seen trying to help others escape from the sinking vessel. In the years that followed, Father Lafleur’s family received letters from many others to whom he had ministered during the war, sharing their stories of how deeply the priest’s selfless actions touched and inspired them.

In October 2008, Lieutenant Colonel Peter Joseph Guerra assisted the Lafleur family in submitting a request to the U.S. Army, asking that Father Lafleur be considered for the Medal of Honor. While the family is still awaiting a decision on that matter, Lt. Col. Guerra has authored a book which chronicles Father Lafleur’s heroic endeavors as a military chaplain.

1. THE 340 Liturgy,
     3 semester hours,
    Fr. William Blanda

Description: An in-depth study of biblical foundations and the theological shape of Catholic worship. Beginning with the theological concept of “liturgy” as participation in the Paschal Mystery of Christ and the life of the Trinity, this course surveys the shape of the liturgy in the Old Testament, in the New Testament, and the current day. Particular attention is paid to the renewal of the liturgy inaugurated by the Second Vatican Council.

We are in need of Eucharistic Adorers on First Fridays, especially the Noon and 1 PM hour. Saturday at the New Life Center

I dropped by the New Life Center in Opelousas, Louisiana on Saturday June 25, 2011. Below are photos of the new sign on Landry Street as well as the front of the building.

Above photo - Dwayne Joubert and Scott Peyton were there painting the laundry room area of the facility. They both are studying to become deacons for the Diocese of Lafayette and are on schedule to be ordained in 2012.

New Life Center, located in Opelousas, provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and supportive services for up to 51 homeless women and 58 children per night. Residents are provided with shelter and services for up to two years while working towards self-sufficiency. All residents participate in case management where they are assisted with applying for mainstream benefits, entering school, obtaining employment and permanent housing.

Residents also participate in life skills sessions, job counseling and are referred to outside agencies for additional counseling. The residents have access to case management services for an additional six months after they leave the center. A chemical dependency program is also available for those women recovering from alcohol and/or drug addictions. This program provides addiction education support groups and case management.

We had a huge turnout for the parish picnic on Sunday, May 15, 2011!

Dirk and Dee Boudreaux helped to coordinate a huge project. Hotdogs and hamburgers were grilled. Fun jumps were out for the kids. Tony Chachere's Party Wagon was out with music and jambalaya. And tons of other folks helped ... we'll publish more details on all of it later.
